Mardi Gras is traditionally a very white upper class affair. Most of my days were spent pushing through crowds of rich white people shoving by with their towheaded babies and ladder chairs OR underage white frat and sorority kids. So for Mardi Gras day I wanted to be with my people. Mardi Gras day is the time when the black folks can really congregate (still in their own areas of course)and celebrate it in their own way. We got up very early to go see the Mardi Gras Indians; the Skull and Bones crew; and to chill and eat barbeque, people watch, and drink beer under the Claiborne Bridge in the Treme. We waited for 6 hours for a parade to pass and nothing ever came, but we had a good time nonetheless.
