I have--however--been a fan of Lauryn Hill, and have put up with a fair amount of her crap. I dealt with seeing her self-righteous ass and delicately styled locs on the cover of every magazine from Essence to Teen People back in '99 (she was always prettier, thinner, and more stylish than me and her hair always looked fucking impeccable, it pissed me off...and it still does!). I hung through her terrible show in San Francisco in the same year where it was clear to everyone that she'd been performing the same rusty set for the last month and a half, and was phoning the whole performance in. I went to see one of her triumphant comebacks back in 2001 in Brooklyn at the African Festival as she mumbled lyrics, cursed about her legal woes , and played guitar poorly in a feeble attempt to look like she wasn't having a nervous breakdown before our very eyes, but was instead having a spiritual rebirth.
So anyway, the other day I hear via Brooklynvegan that there was a leak from the forthcoming Lauryn Hill album on Old Kentucky blog. So I go over there and grab a track and stick it on my Ipod. This was about a week ago and I've considered listening to it a couple of times but I am too afraid. I think I am just gonna delete it and buy The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill of I-Tunes. The future is too frightening to face.
